KEYS Participates in Study to Develop LNG Bunkering Hub in Kyushu

In March 2022, KEYS Bunkering West Japan Ltd. participated as an observer in a study group that was established by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) Kyushu Regional Development Bureau and the city of Kitakyushu to develop an LNG bunkering base in Kyushu.
In response to the shipping sector’s urgent need to become carbon neutral and the increasing worldwide introduction of more environmentally friendly LNG-fueled vessels and LNG bunkering vessels, Japan is working to strengthen the international competitiveness of its ports and harbors. As part of that, MLIT is providing support for the development of facilities required for the formation of LNG bunkering hubs.
In the Kyushu region, the Kitakyushu port carbon neutral port (CNP) study group, which comprises companies, the government, and the city of Kitakyushu, was set up in 2021 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero and form a CNP at the port of Kitakyushu. Additionally, the formation of an LNG bunkering hub is being discussed.
To accelerate these efforts, the MLIT Kyushu Regional Development Bureau and the city of Kitakyushu jointly set up a study group and compiled measures to form an LNG bunkering hub in the Kyushu region. As the only LNG fuel supplier in Kitakyushu, KEYS became an observer at the study group and provided advice on LNG fuel demand forecasts and designing a roadmap for the formation of an LNG bunkering hub in Kyushu.
KEYS will continue to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions towards the realization of a carbon-neutral society through this LNG bunkering project.
